A range of advanced urban traffic management systems are expected to feature on the new, expanded Copenhagen ring road as part of a three year contruction programme scheduled to begin in April this year.
Already carying around 80,000 vehicles a day, the M3 ring road will be expanded to three lanes over a 17-kilometre stretch and is set to become the country's largest road traffic management system. The contract, awarded to the French IT service provider Steria, includes the provision of traffic detection and automatic speed harmonization systems, CCTV cameras, VMS and communications links, all connected to the central control room of the Danish Roads Directorate.
The Traffic Expert system put in place by Steria will operate on Linux servers in conjunction with Windows XP to provide dynamic signalling management, video-surveillance and graphical presentation of traffic data in real time via a Web interface.
"The system is designed to allow for traffic management to be caried out automatically, based on the second-by-second flow of data reaching the information centre," said a spokesoman for Steria. "Manual intervention is provided for in case of need with a menu of messages for VMS already in the system."
